A série, antes de mais nada, é do gênero Shonen. Conta a história de um garoto que podia interagir com espíritos e que em um dia normal acaba por ter de optar entre deixar que sua família morresse ou aceitar se tornar um Shinigami. Com muito humor, ação e ótimas lições sobre persistência, Bleach tentava trilhar o seu caminho no mercado de mangás japonês.
A primeira apresentação de Bleach para a publicação na Shonen Jump foi recusada. A editoria da revista alegava que a obra era muito parecida com o atual mangá que fazia sucesso na época: YuYu Hakushô. Por esse motivo, eles não publicariam a obra.
Kubo Tite, então, apresentaria um outro título para a revista, Zombie Powder, que foi veiculado na edição número 34 da Shonen Jump. Mas o destino não parecia estar a seu favor. Após a publicação do quarto volume, a série foi cancelada. Mas isso não mudava o fato de Kubo, naquele momento, ser considerado um prodígio.
Contudo, mesmo após a recusa de Bleach, Kubo não havia desistido de seu projeto. Buscando apoio, ele havia enviado o seu trabalho a diversos mangakás do Japão. E nesta lista, estava incluso aquele que era o seu ídolo: Akira Toriyama, o criador da série Dragon Ball. Após ler a obra de Tite, Toriyama lhe enviou palavras de apoio para que o mesmo não desistisse.
Em 2001, Kubo tentaria novamente a publicação de Bleach. Com certas mudanças no roteiro, a série estava novamente sob avaliação da revista Shonen Jump, e desta vez, foi aceita. Foi assim, que em Agosto de 2001 começava o sucesso de Ichigo e seus companheiros.
O primeiro volume de Bleach, publicado pela Shueisha, vendeu mais de 1,25 milhão de cópias, e neste momento o sucesso estava de fato consagrado. Em 2005 a série recebeu o importante título "Shogakukan Manga Award" na categoria Shonen. A série está em exibição na TV Tokyo desde 5 de outubro de 2004.
Num geral, a série conta com 30 volumes compilados, 296 capítulos, 144 Episódios, dois OVAs ("Memories In The Rain" e "The Sealed Sword of Frenzzy") que foram exibidos nas duas últimas "Jump Festa" ? um dos eventos mais importante de animê no Japão ? e, por fim, dois filmes: "Memories of Nobody" e "Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion".
A série animada é transmitida todas as quarta-feiras pela TV Tokyo e suas afiliadas por todo o Japão. É co-produzida pelos Studio Pierrot, Dentsu e TV Tokyo, e dirigido por Noriyuki Abe. A primeira fase da série animada, que seguia o roteiro do mangá, teve 63 episódios, após isso, até o episódio 109 foram exibidos fillers que tinham como propósito deixar que o novo arco de histórias continuasse se desenvolvendo no mangá enquanto o animê continuava a ser transmitido. Caso isso não tivesse ocorrido e a série animada tivesse alcançado a cronologia do mangá, talvez Bleach tivesse de parar a sua exibição por um tempo.
Na América Latina, os direitos da série estão por conta da empresa VIZ Media que já lançou 20 volumes do mangá na América do Norte. Em dezembro de 2006, o mangá atingiu o TOP 10 de vendagem, e com o volume 17 em fevereiro de 2007 foi o mangá mais vendido. Com bons resultados, a VIZ expandiu o seu mercado em relação a Bleach, em março de 2006, ela adquiriu os direitos de produtos e da série animada.
A versão americana de Bleach foi ao ar pelo canal do Canadá YTV no programa chamado Bionix, no dia 8 de setembro. Na noite seguinte, Bleach ia ao ar pela Cartoon Network, no bloco Adult Swim ? que é famoso por não censurar as séries exibidas. Conseqüência disso foi que, em 2006, Bleach foi indicado para os prêmios de melhor mangá e de melhor tema no American Anime Awards e em 2007 para melhor mangá, melhor ator, melhor design de DVD e melhor tema. Em terras brazucas, até o fechamento desse artigo, a série estava sendo dublada mas a data de estréia não havia sido definida.
